Enrollment

The small size of Onaway not only means a close community of campers and counselors, but also guarantees each girl will get the maximum of individual attention.   There are approximately 90 girls, ranging in age from 9 – 15 years.   In addition, Aides (or junior counselors) and 24 counselors run the programs.   Most counselors have been campers at Onaway.

Tuition

The tuition for the summer of 2012 will be $6,100 plus a $50 activity fee.  Scholarships are available for those who qualify.  To obtain a financial aid application, please contact the Onaway office.

Program

Our daily program offers a high level of instruction in traditional camp activities accompanied by strong arts offerings.  The Onaway program is a balance between scheduled morning instruction and choice time in the afternoon.   We hope each camper will become proficient and derive pleasure from accomplishment in all Camp activities, but we also make sure to provide time for each camper to pursue the activity or activities wherein her greatest interest lies.

Each camper has two hours a week of morning instruction in tennis, arts and crafts, woodworking, sewing, classical dance, boating and/or canoeing, sailing and/or crew . At least one hour per week is allotted to nature study, camp craft, and drama, with extra time for trips, rehearsals, and practical experience. Weather permitting there are two swimming periods a day – one devoted entirely to lessons and the other a free swim time to play.

Other activities such as choir, photography, knitting, creative writing and others are offered under the supervision of trained counselors and are open to campers on an optional basis.

In as much as we believe that outdoor camp craft skills and experience develop almost more than anything else a girl’s self-reliance, initiative, cooperation and sensitivity to nature, Onaway has an active Trips and Camp Craft Program.   All groups in Camp go out frequently, and we make sure that only experienced leaders take the campers off the grounds.   All groups make overnight camping trips either on the lake or at nearby rivers and lakes. Girls are taught to pitch a tent, wield an axe, read a compass, cook their food, and follow a trail, so as to ensure life-long competence in the woods.

Hiking is popular.   Frequent climbs to nearby peaks and the Presidentials are offered whenever the weather is right.   These expeditions are under the supervision of skilled counselors, who teach proper techniques.   The Senior Hiking Club, Intermediate Hiking Club and Junior Hiking Club are made up of strong, enthusiastic girls.  The girls spend up to three days and two nights climbing in the Presidentials and sleeping in AMC huts.   Three to five day backpacking trips explore new territory and are challenging experiences. Selection to these expeditions is based on endurance, cooperation and good sportsmanship.

Health

The health of each child is always a first consideration at Onaway. A resident nurse is in constant attendance, and a doctor, just five minutes away, makes daily visits and is on twenty four hour call. Plymouth Hospital, twelve miles away, is a well equipped, modern hospital with an excellent staff.

The camp’s infirmary is spacious, modern and attractive with a four-bed ward, two private rooms, two full baths, kitchen, dispensary, and nurses quarters. It has a large, sunny porch for rest, and is near the main kitchen.

Nutritional guidance is available in the Dining Hall for girls who wish to lose weight under supervision of the nurse. smaller portions are served, and fruit is substituted for sweet desserts.

Table

Onaway is noted for its good and ample table. The best foods are served, fresh fruits are always available, and baking is done on the premises. Our chef, Bruce McKenzie, makes an effort to prepare food that appeals to young people and often fulfills requests! Vegetarian entrees are always available.

Uniform

A camp uniform is required. The outfit – which will be sent to you in a mailing before camp begins – is all a girl needs in Camp and may easily be packed in a foot locker. Most campers rent second hand uniforms from the Camp’s voluminous closet. New uniforms are available through Maine Camp Outfitters, password onaway.
