We have received so many lovely notes about this special weekend and wanted to share some of them here (not enough room in the newsletter I’m afraid!).
“Just a quick note to say how wonderful the Centennial Weekend was. Everything was so well planned and so well carried out. Also Helen Greven’s book is a real keeper. When I purchased it, I thought I’d just scan it. I ended up reading every single word.” Claudette (Miss Chickie) Bayer
“It was wonderful to see my fellow campers from the 1940′s and early ’50′s. I drove home singing camp songs. How lucky I was to spend six wonderful summers at Onaway – they shaped my values!!” Joke Russell
“The reunion was so beautifully done, down to the last detail. Thank you for all of that and for the wonderful summer for all the girls.” Anne Carter Zadig
“In appreciation for a stellar Centennial celebration…My mental snapshots consist of sitting on the little Onaway rock (to the right of the big area) with my daughter Aldie having swam over there and soaking in the scene, the gigantic Circle under the tent after Saturday evening festivities, and the intermingling of young and old and in between Onaway women.” Helen Lippincott Jennings
“I am still energized by the amazing experience that my daughter Elsa and I had with so many Onaway alums at the Centennial. Wow. Thank you all for attending and those friends who couldn’t – you were missed. I hope we can duplicate at least some of the festivities and closeness at the five year reunions.” Lizza Miller
“The Centennial Weekend was unforgettable, beautifully organized and run. It was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. The Onaway sisterhood is strong and ageless!” Kay Francis Graff
“What a wonderful 100th birthday party and reunion we had in August. It was such fun to see people I hadn’t seen for years – girls I’d been friends with when we were 10 and 12 years old; Mona Rice who was my roommate the first year I was a counselor, etc.,etc.,etc. And now we’re all grandmothers! It was also an opportunity for the Stiles and Hillhouse cousins to be together after way too many years. There were many highlights over the weekend, but the “unveiling” of Helen Stokes Greven’s book, LET HER STRONG AND AGELESS BE, was probably the best. And Polly Crawford Birr and I had to go all the way to Onaway to see each other, even though we live only about 15 miles from each other in Oregon! It was an incredible weekend and I’m ready to do it again. There was a huge amount of organization that went in to making it such a great weekend. A very sincere thanks to all who made it go so smoothly.” Ellie Stiles Dumdi (camper 1940-46, aide 1947, counselor 1949-55)
“The attached photo is of the Crawford Girls at the Centennial, in front of our cabin (which will forevermore be known as Crawford Notch!). Left to right: Anne Crawford Trumpler, Polly Crawford Birr, Beth Crawford Hucker. Anne and I are sisters, Beth is our cousin. We had such an extraordinary time reliving our Onaway experience and sharing memories with friends from the ’60′s and ’70′s. Thank you to everyone who worked hard to make Centennial Weekend so special.”
My 4 year old daughter Grace is still talking about the weekend – from the songs Friday at Campfire Rock, to the Children’s party Saturday – to canoeing and swimming in the lake. It was truly a happy and fun weekend. Carolyn Ellis
The weekend at Onaway was fantastic. It was great to have so much quality time with so many of the ladies from my cabin group and also my aunt and cousins.
Kudos to you and to all that worked so tirelessly on organizing the Centennial Weekend! It was so obvious that so much work and time went into all the details! Jessica Buell Brugel
My husband, Sidney, and I are still in a daze after last weekend. What a fantastic time we had! We continue to wish we were still there, and we offer congratulations to everyone on a superb event. My enthusiasm for everything and everyone associated with Onaway has been reinforced multiple times. Patsy McCook
I have no words to describe how magnificent the Centenial was for me and I am positive EVERYBODY! What a wonderful event that I will remember and cherish forever!
Again, I am so appreciative of everybody who worked so hard and for so long to put together such a meaningful, joyous, moving and intensely beautiful event! Anne Wemple Marks
